"We take PRIDE in your RIDE
2 x 25
®" MIRIAM KING Photo For about 15 minutes on Friday, May 11, the entire school at Alcona Glen Elementary, in Innisfil, walked around the playing field, to raise awareness of Children's Mental Health issues. Every student, from Kindergarten to Grade 8, teachers, staff, parents, and special guests that included Innisfil Mayor Barb Baguley, carried the message: "You are not Alone."
Kids reject rejection of mentally ill
Miriam King All during Children's Mental Health Week, May 6 to 12, students at Alcona Glen Elementary School learned about mental health issues, from New Path Child & Family Services, and from their own leadership team. They learned that 1 in 5 children will experience mental illness - ranging from anxiety or depression, to schizophrenia. They learned that the stigma still attached to mental illness can be isolating, and hurtful - and that over 600,000 Ontario families are dealing with that stigma. And they learned the importance of being accepting and supportive, within their school community. On May 11, the school community - over 700 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8, as well as teachers, staff, parent volunteers, and special guests that included Laurie Leslie, of New Path, and Innisfil Mayor Barb Baguley - participated in a Children's Mental Health Awareness Walk. For 15 minutes, they circled the playing fields, carrying banners and flags that declared: "You Are Not Alone." Often, older students held hands with the kindergarten kids, helping the youngest ones to walk the distance. "The school has really pulled it together for children's mental health," said Leslie. "I'm so proud of this school... It's all about destigmatizing mental health, especially in children."
